How Much Does An Offset Pressman Make?

As an offset printing pressman, what should my salary be in 2020? How much money should I be making?  If your like me, this question about salary pops in your mind every time you get paid.  Probably not enough, right?  I would like to share with you how much the pressman make that I have worked with as well as some factors that make a difference how much they got paid.

I have worked in four different pressrooms in 22 years on six different presses.  Though we never openly spoke about it, somehow we knew how much the other got paid.  Additionally, I have friends in the industry who volunteered the information.  Here's how much they made.

A first pressman on a web press in the places I've worked in the past 10 years made anywhere from 33 to 39 dollars per hour.  The salary graduated down to barely above minimum wage for the newbie.  Sheetfed pressmen were usually paid in high 20's if they were skilled and worked with four color.

Now that raises some questions.  What determines how much they got paid?  I think three factors come into play: location, equipment and experience.

Salary and Location
Average salary based on location.
The average salary of a pressman according to one salary survey says that a pressman who works downtown Manhattan makes an average of $48,000 per year.  A pressman in Miami makes about $28,000.  It seems that the cost of living as well as the number of pressmen available makes a difference.  The wages I spoke about earlier were for pressmen who worked downtown Vancouver, Canada.  So yes, even the country you work in makes a difference.

Equipment
I have mostly worked on high speed commercial heatset web presses and wages have been a little higher than the sheetfed, though not without exception.  It is a simple principle that applies to any trade: the more expertise and experience required, the higher the salary.  Working on a press that is worth millions not doubt makes a difference, but if monkeys could do it then we would all be making minimum wage, wouldn't we?

Experience
Lastly, the statistics you see online really don't mean much.  They tell you the average wage.  That covers the new guy as well as the veteran.  Take it with a grain of salt.  You can do much better than those averages if you have half a brain and a few years under your belt.

If you would be willing to share how much you make, where you live, and equipment you work on, please share in a post below.  After all, that's the info you want too, isn't it?

Not a bad pay rate. I ran a 6color Mitsu W/Coater in Pgh Pa for$31.33 an hour.Non Union. That was in 2008 Be for the big bust.I had 16 years in the trade. But found out the money was in sales and I made the job easy for them. That when I made them work for me.Customer OKs is where I made the sales team earn there money. They had no idea about offset printing so I made them sell the product. And I just kept sending in press sheets to the customer until I got an ok sheet to run to.Trust me if you are a good pressman let the company/ sales staff/csr &customer do there job. Let them work for you........ You hold the ball. Pgh Pa has a lot of good paying printing jobs if you know what you are doing.Avoid the 12hour day 3day 4 day shops they all suck.

Because sheeted printing requires greater quality over much shorter runs.

    2. Sheetfed printing though is very waste efficient, id expect any half decent printer with 400 make ready sheets to be able to achieve a high quality product, whereas on a web you don't have the stop/start luxury a sheetfed printer does. In the time a sheetfed printer pulls 100 sheets, stops to check colour/fit a web can have run through a few thousand copies. I work in the uk and at my place our web number 2 pressmen earn as much as a sheetfed printer. Both are highly skilled jobs but i certainly believe the web operators deserve a slighly higher pay!

      Delete
    3. Anonymous9:51 AM

I agree, after all as a web pressman I am responsible for quality assurance on four sides at once running 60k an hour not one side running 9k an hour not to mention I have to babysit more helpers and also worry about folding, splicers, dryers and a stacker. We print just as high of quality as the sheetfed does with ten times the responsibility and the money should be based on the responsibility you carry.

i received my training in germany. went to school and learn letterpress, offset, and rotogravure printing. ran windmills, cylinders, gto and numerous 1/c 2/c 4/c 5/c and 10/c heidelbergs. the last few years all i did is train my replacements. high school kids they think they know it all. don't want to listen when you explain something. They just know it better. about 4 years ago i was making 26.00 in the rockford illinois area. i have been trying to get another job in printing, but all i hear is that i am overqualified. could it be that i am to old with 40 years of experience? I still feel great and i love printing. It's more like a hobby for me. Most of the companies don't care for quality any more.

The sad truth is companies truly want to shave as much as they can from payroll to increase the profit! I currently run a 6clr console op. with no feeder or press tender. 10 and 12hr shifts are simply grooling on the body! they don't understand some highschool kids are gonna cost them alot of money when they lock up that 40inch imp. cylinder on a blue net replacement!

I'v been at my current job 15+yrs, never seen an evaluation, there's no hand book for the shop of do's and don't s, they just kind of make it up as they go.I have seen increases, some good some really bad. last increase was 3yrs ago, 4yrs before that. i am considered the head pressmen in the shop now for many years. Is this common for things to be so random?. feel like I'm only as good as my last job. 4-6/C

My pay has gone down. I was making $36 hr. w/ benefits with 38 yrs. experience as a 1st Pressman on 6+ color, sheetfed with coaters & UV running Heidleberg/ Komori/ Mitsubishi/ KBA/ Akiyama & now I make $30 paying $1000 mo.for healthcare in So Cal. Companies have changed since recession hit in '08-'09, Obamacare is a nightmare for those in middle America needing healthcare. Looking to move w/ better pay + benefits are a huge plus.
